About the position

What you'll do

As a Material Scientist at Jälle, you’ll be at the intersection of metallurgical recovery, carbon-based material development, and advanced characterization:

  • Develop and optimize chemical and thermal processes to convert recycled graphite into graphene oxide (GO) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO).

  • Design and run experiments involving hydrometallurgical leaching, precipitation, or selective metal separation from battery waste streams.

  • Conduct physicochemical and structural characterization (XRD, Raman, BET, AAS) to evaluate purity, performance, and application potential.

  • Explore structure–property relationships and tune materials for applications in supercapacitors, electrocatalysis, coatings, or conductive additives.

  • Collaborate closely with a multidisciplinary R&D team, including chemists, engineers, and circular economy experts.

  • Contribute to method development, patent filings, and customer-facing technical documentation.

What we're looking for

  • M.Sc. or Ph.D. in Materials Science, Nanotechnology, Chemical Engineering, or a related field.

  • Experience with carbon nanomaterials, battery materials, or advanced composites.

  • Proficiency in material analysis techniques (SEM, Raman, XRD, BET, etc.).

  • Strong problem-solving mindset, data-driven thinking, and a passion for clean technologies.

  • Excellent communication skills in English; Estonian is a plus.

Nice-to-have:

  • Prior work in battery recycling, graphene production, or graphite processing.

  • Experience in scaling up from lab to pilot-scale.

  • Familiarity with life cycle assessment (LCA) or techno-economic analysis.

What we offer

  • A rare chance to help commercialize groundbreaking materials science from lab to pilot scale.

  • Competitive salary in a high-impact startup.

  • A collaborative and ambitious team with deep expertise and a strong mission.

  • The opportunity to leave a lasting mark on Europe’s circular materials ecosystem.

Jälle Technologies is on a mission to transform battery waste into next-generation materials. We’re developing breakthrough solutions to recover critical metals and upcycle battery waste from used lithium-ion batteries into a material with game-changing applications in energy storage, electronics, coatings, and more.

Backed by deep scientific expertise, grant funding, and initial industry partnerships, we’re scaling our lab innovations into an industrial reality.
