Jälle Technologies Opens New R&D Laboratory to Advance Circular Battery Materials and Graphene Innovation

9. dets 2025

The Estonian Minister of Energy & Environment opens Jälle's lab activities - Where breakthrough science meets scalable industry

Jälle Technologies has officially opened its new R&D laboratory at Akadeemia tee 23, marking a major step forward in Estonia’s capabilities in battery recycling, circular economy technologies, and advanced carbon materials.

The facility enables the scale-up of Jälle’s proprietary process for transforming graphite-rich battery waste into high-value graphene-like materials as well as ongoing development of lithium recovery technologies essential for Europe’s clean energy transition.

A National Milestone for Estonia

Andres Sutt — Minister of Energy & Environment
“What Jälle Technologies has achieved is remarkable — they have created a new scientific and industrial capability for Estonia. Battery recycling and advanced materials are central to Europe’s energy security and climate ambitions. Estonia needs companies like Jälle, who turn high-value research into high-value industry.”

The research direction that led to Jälle Technologies was initially supported by the Estonian Research Council and KIK, laying the groundwork for a field that did not previously exist in Estonia.

Strengthening Europe’s Deeptech Pipeline

Mart Toots — Enterprise Estonia
“Europe needs more laboratories like this — places where high-potential science becomes industrial reality. Jälle’s new lab demonstrates Estonia’s ability to convert research excellence into scalable, investable technology.”

From Research to Industrial Innovation

Prof. Raivo Stern — National Institute of Chemical Physics and Biophysics (KBFI)
“What began as fundamental research has grown into a true industrial innovation pathway. This laboratory is the bridge between scientific discovery and real-world application.”

Four of Jälle’s founders originate from KBFI’s battery recycling research team, making this partnership foundational to the company’s success.

Circular Economy Leadership

Riina Aav — TalTech, Centre of Excellence in Circular Economy
“Circular economy innovation means designing systems where materials never become waste. Jälle Technologies is showing exactly what this looks like — turning the most problematic battery fraction into new value streams for European industry.”

What the New Laboratory Enables

  • Development of next-generation graphene-like materials

  • Scale-up of lithium recovery processes aligned with EU battery regulation

  • Production of test materials for partners in coatings, composites, electronics, and energy storage

  • Preparation for a future pilot line and pre-industrial manufacturing

CEO Erki Ani and CTO Dr. Kerli Liivand presented the company’s roadmap for scaling its technologies and expanding collaborations across Europe.

The most recent win for team of Jälle has been the Climatech Connect prize by EIT Climate-KIC and EIT Digital / 28 Digital. While the previous grant funding has been dedicated mostly on technological development, this prize allows the team to start company-wide transformation leaning into market entry.
