President Karis visits Jälle’s new lab to witness how Estonia’s science-driven innovation is transforming battery waste into strategic materials.
Jälle Technologies had the honour of welcoming President of the Republic of Estonia, Alar Karis, as the first official visitor to our newly opened laboratory at Akadeemia tee. The visit marked an important milestone for our team as we showcased the next phase of our work in lithium-ion battery recycling and circular materials innovation.
During the visit, we demonstrated how Jälle transforms graphite-rich recycling waste—traditionally a cost burden for recyclers—into high-performance graphene-based materials. This process not only adds value to waste streams but reinforces Europe’s goal of retaining and securing critical raw materials within its own supply chains.

Our CTO Dr. Kerli Liivand also shared the story of how Jälle began: from early individual research grants, to establishing a battery recycling working group at the National Institute of Chemical Physics and Biophysics (NICPB), to eventually building a world-class team backed by some of Europe’s leading impact VCs. Her journey illustrates how strong science, persistence, and collaboration can grow into a deeptech company solving globally relevant challenges.
President Karis showed genuine curiosity and deep scientific interest, engaging closely with Kerli and the team and diving into the technical details of the process. His scientific background was evident throughout the discussion, as he asked thoughtful questions about the chemistry, engineering, and scalability of our technology. His engagement made the visit especially memorable for our team.

“The President’s visit reinforces the importance of scientific innovation in ensuring Europe’s material sovereignty and supporting the green transition,” said Erki Ani, CEO of Jälle Technologies. “It was a privilege to present our work at this early stage of scaling our new lab.”
As Europe intensifies its focus on critical raw material independence, sustainable manufacturing, and circularity, Jälle Technologies stands at the intersection of these priorities—turning battery waste into strategic, next-generation materials for industry.
We thank President Karis and his team for their time, engagement, and support for Estonia’s deeptech ecosystem.
